Some news after so much time!

13-28/06/2011

Long time without giving any news… It’s not that I’m dead but just that I didn’t have a second to give news.
The past two weeks went flying by! 2 different groups, I said goodbye to UNC Greensboro after a memorable farewell dinner. I did my first “love circle” where everyone needs to tell what she/he brought to the group and what he/she gained from the group. It was a new experience and it was interesting.

I dropped part of the group on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday morning I took the bus to go to Flamingo to receive my new group. During the journey I take care of the STV passengers because we had to wait 1 hour for a student who “forgot” he had transportation to Flamingo this morning…
On the way we stopped to have lunch and received a nice visit: wild parrots! Nice view and off course, as a good tourist, my camera always with me, I could have good shots. (Well for photo’ specialists they won’t be good but for any other person, they will be good enough to enjoy)

Heavy rain welcomed us to Flamingo… which was very nice for those in the bus, looking at it through the windows… it was a bit less nice for me who was jumping out the bus to check which student the families were waiting for. To see it on the positive side: I had free showers ;)

I got to the school at 4:30pm and my group was already waiting for me there. I dropped them at their houses and went to my apartment. I shared with Ciera, another chaperone I had already met in Heredia.

Not a lot to say about this week apart that it went very quick. The group was nice and quite easy to deal with. They were only 21 kids aged from 16 to 18 and the 3 teachers were good and helpful. We did the canopy which was nice because in the middle of the forest but nothing to compare from the Canopy in Monteverde. The storm caught us in the middle of the tour and we finished soaked wet! The rain was so hard that you couldn’t keep your eyes open…quite scary when you are suppose to brake to stop…but we managed it and all finished alive. Or at least I came back with the same number of studends...can't promise it was the same, but the number was correct :P

The HUGE thing about this week was the boat tour we did on Wednesday. That was one of the best tour I’ve done so far. We were on a boat with free open bar… don’t look at me like that: it was non alcoholic drinks for us. The catamaran headed though the deep water and after an hour navigating, we reached a creek where we were able to do some snorkeling. The water wasn’t very clear but we were able to see some very nice fishes and shellfishes. During the entire journey we were able to relax listening to music: PURA VIDA.

Don't ask question....please don't ;)

One of the girls in my group wanted to see the pictures I took with my camera. After telling her to be careful, she put the safety strap of the camera around her arm but keep the protective pouch in the other hand. I wasn’t looking at her but hear a “Ooooh” and knew at once that something wrong had happen…well to be polite, I would say that my student try to teach to my other battery and my money how to swing…except that it didn’t work and my battery and money are now in the middle of the sea. Of course, the time she asked me what had fallen into the sea, the battery and the 20 000 colones bill (=40$ =30€) which was stuck inside the plastic case were far away and far under the sea level…no hope to have it back. I was a “bit” annoyed but managed to keep cool and laugh about it… well there was nothing else I could do, screaming and crying wouldn’t have changed anything! Better taking it smoothly and be relaxed. The worst part being that I bought the battery especially for this trip because I wanted to be able to take a lot of pictures without ever being without battery… Well I’ll have to be careful and plan the “charge” stop during our trekking in Panama and Colombia.
Apart from that, we had a blast!

It was Paige birthday and I must admit the tour was a perfect gift for her. I myself offered her an unforgettable gift, a typical “Clara” one…I helped her to skip from the boat… Ok ok… I admit it…I pushed her from the boat… BUT I wasn’t alone so it’s less severe no? Ok ok I planned it with the boys…I’m unforgivable… and I’m not sorry at all! I will do it without any doubt!

The time spent at the beach was nice even if rain came to see us a lot of time: can’t complain, it’s the wet season here. The crazy smoothie lady came back:

My kids did love me a lot: one even tattooed my name on her arm ;)

After the Mora group I had 3 days off. That was quite funny because when Arelys called me to tell me I was free, she didn’t stop before saying “there is a transportation for Monteverde…”. I think that everyone know I’m a Monteverde addict and that there is no point of wanting sending me somewhere else when I can go there. Some of you can say it’s stupid to always to back there and that I should take this time to discover more about Costa Rica. They would be right but at the same time, I already saw a lot of Costa Rica and where I didn’t go, I can’t go just for 2 days because the transportation takes 5 hours and leave at midday. And well to be honest, I enjoyed so much Monteverde that I want to take advantage of it as much as I can.

The second day I was there, my “son” was waiting for me in front of my house. How did he know I was back and I was living there again, I had no idea but he was waiting for me! That made me very happy! I had brought him a little ball and a bone and he enjoyed them immensely.

One of the nights I was able to sit outside my flat to work because the weather was just perfect. Meggie, my wonderful flatmate (she made a wonderful Gallo Pinto just for me!!!) took me in the action!

My last day in Monteverde was synonyms of shopping and fun! First I had to say goodbye to my flipflop, it was time for them…RIP. So I went down town to buy a new pair. And when you buy a pair of shoes you need to buy a dress it’s the rule isn’t it? Oo it’s not? Well too late… :D

At night we went out with Meggie to have a farewell drink together. I passed at the school to give some stuffs to Royner. I was sure he wouldn’t come because he was tired so I just try the “Come on, let’s go, you don’t have the choice, it’s my last night in Monteverde!” and I was amazed…it worked! There we met 3 Americans studying at CPI and we had a lot of fun. I made them tried the “Clara Fire” and they liked it. I’m going to be famous for that ;)

Lightnings in Monteverde

Some lightnings in Monteverde. It was beautiful! You can see bigger one that those but wasn't able to get a movie of them... It will be for another time! :)

I’m crazy and I know it so why am I still surprised sometimes?

 10-12/06/2011

Last week end my group went to Limon, on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica. I was supposed to go there with them and was excited too. Indeed I’ve never been there and it was an opportunity to discover it. But last minute change made it impossible for me to go. When my boss called me on Thursday afternoon to tell me I wasn’t going, the first question I asked wasn’t why (I wouldn’t get an answer anyway^^) but “is there any CPI transportation for Monteverde this week end?”. Oh yes my friends, as soon as I knew I had 3 days off, everything was clear in my head: I was going to spend them in Monteverde, my favorite place in the world.
I sent a message to Royner “do you want an ice cream tomorrow night?”, I would have loved seeing his face because his answer was “tomorrow? How is that possible?”. After checking with him, I made my bag and was excited to go back to Monteverde after such a long time… 4 days…I’m definitely completely crazy!

I arrived at Monteverde at 11am and went directly to Royner’s to leave my bags. He was surprised to see me at that time because I told him I was going to take the afternoon bus. I thought I would do so but at the last moment I thought it would be a loss of time to sleep at my house during the morning and spend all the afternoon in the bus. It was better to take the morning bus, sleep in it and then have the whole afternoon and evening in Monteverde.
Banjo was very pleased but scared by the gift I brought him.

We spoke a bit and then he went to go the school while I went to Sabores, the ice-cream shop, to use the wireless and work a bit. At 6 I met a ex-student from Rollins’ group who is currently doing a placement at CPI. We talked for a while. I then bought the ice-cream for Royner and I and went back to the school to eat it with him. We spent some time to speak, listen to music and see pictures. Back at his place, we got ready to go and dance a bit.

It was a good night…but let’s face it: it’s always good in Monteverde. Saturday morning we went to do some volunteering for the elderly at the local market. Well to be honest I met Royner over there and participated buying a snack and a drink. I arrived around 10am but he was there since 6am, cooking and serving food! I tip my hat to him!
There is no option: Banjo IS, without a doubt, Royner’s dog: don’t you see a similarity??

After the feria, we went to have lunch at a local restaurant with Digna and Arelys. Is was nice too. The afternoon went very quickly. We spent part of it at the school using the computer, listening to music, looking at photos, joking…in a word: having a blast!
At night we watched a movie: “Hell’s gate” how to describe this movie…first to describe it, you would have to understand it which was not our case! One of the worst movies ever!

Sunday morning we slept in, watched another movie and that was already the end of the week end. I went to the bus station to buy my ticket and a bad news was waiting for me: no seat available!!

My good mood dropped in a second. There is only 2 buses to go from Monteverde to Heredia: one ay 6:30am and one at 2:30 pm…and I really needed to be back at Heredia Monday 7am at the latest! The driver was friendly and offered me to drop me at Sardinal which is down the mountain, near the main road where I could, hopefully, find another bus going to San José. :S :S At least I know the lesson now: always buy the ticket before!
I was lucky, after only 45 minutes waiting, and 4 buses passing by without stopping, one coming from Tamarindo had some seats available and stopped. The bus was high class: we had AC that was then a nice journey to Heredia. This bus was even quicker than the public bus so I managed to get to Heredia before my group and was able to welcome then back from there week-end to Limon: all went perfect at the end!

Crazy and proud of it

Loco Day!

05/06/2011

The night before we had settled to have brunch all four of us at Dulce Marzo at 11am. There we met some eccentric , completely crazy but very nice American ladies.

The brunch was so good! Royner had the burrito meanwhile I had the “special scrambled eggs” and both had a cup of coffee. It was the best coffee I had had so far and couldn’t resist having a second cup. We also tried the specialty: the Manmosa! What is a Manmosa? Well it’s the contraction of Man and Mimosa. And what is a Mimosa?  It’s champagne + orange juice… So can you figure out what is a Manmosa? …. …. …. …. No? …. …. …. ….a Manmosa= a Mimosa for a man so it’s 3 times the size of a Mimosa ;) Katelyn had the burrito also while Scott took the potatoes-bacon-cheese plate.

I should be a professional photographer

Manmosa!

Anything better than a nap after a good brunch??
We then went to show the school to Katelyn and Scott. They fell in love with it: who wouldn’t?? We laid down in the hammocks and chatted. It was great!

Katelyn wanted to go to hot springs to relax. We laughed out loud at this idea because there are no hot springs here in Monteverde. Then they told us that they had their rented car here and that we could do whatever we wanted! It was a powerful argument and ½ later we were all in the car to go to Las Juntas to the hot springs! 1 hour and a half later we got there and enjoyed it immensely!

We finished this day by going down town to eat dinner. We opted for a Chinese restaurant Royner knew and let him choose for the four of us. It was delicious… photos as proof!

Royner and Katelyn were still hungry and wanted some meal so they went for a 2nd ;)

Back to my flat we said goodbye to Scott and Katelyn and Royner came for 2 minutes to take the food I had left and I was giving him not to throw it away. I made fun of him because without gel in his hair he had a little hoop which reminded me of The King. Of course, as soon as I told him that he offered me a demo:

I’m working very hard to follow the most popular phrase in Costa Rica: PURA VIDA. I must admit… I think I’m not too bad at it!
